As of 1991, the National Electrical Codes (NEC) has required GFI protection in all wet places of the home. These areas include basements, crawlspaces, baths, exterior, garages, kitchen, pools and spas. These requirements have been phased in since 1971.

Although these may have been required by NEC at the time your house was built, local or municipal codes departments did not enforce this.
